Tempe Friends Meeting House, 318 East 15th Street, Tempe, AZ, (between Apache Boulevard and Broadway Road). 2 blocks south of Red Line city bus.
WITH GREAT INTENTIONS: AFGHANISTAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE IN WAR ZONE Greg Long, Speaker Native Arizonan Greg Long has spent over 35 years traveling and working in the Mid-east and Asia. Following a 30-year military career as a Green Beret and in the intelligence community, Long began providing humanitarian assistance in countries he had formerly served in that were involved in civil wars.
Following the September 11 terrorist attack in the US, Mr. Long traveled to Afghanistan with Partners International Foundation (PIF), a close-knit group of former Special Forces soldiers specializing in high risk humanitarian missions. During a visit to assess the feasibility of delivering food, tents, and blankets by airdrop to Afghans in the Kunduz area, Long himself was wounded while rescuing two National Geographic photographers caught in an ambush.
In December Long was interviewed on KNAU Radio for NPR on these events. As an expert on humanitarian issues, Mr. Long has been featured in both local and national news media.
Mr. Long holds a Masters in Strategic Intelligence and Chinese (Mandarin) from the Defense Intelligence College. He also spent several years conducting postgraduate studies in the Peoples Republic of China as a Chinese Foreign Area officer for the Department of Defense. He can be contacted for interview dates at MeBoun46@hotmail.com, or go to his web site at www.partners-international.org which has pictures from his endeavors in Afghanistan and Cambodia, among others.
